Branch Homepage |
1. The City of Dundee Branch Homepage is meant as a portal or doorway to other pages on our host server. The homepage will comprise mainly of precis information which will be linked to other pages on the area of server which we use.
2. The page opens in both Internet Explorer & Netscape Navigator to the pipe tune Battle of the Somme which plays for approximately one minute. This tune is re-played each time the homepage is entered. For example if you follow a link to another page and then return to the homepage the tune will play again.
3. On the top left of the page under Branch Address is a button marked Our address in Map 24 when this is clicked it jumps to a page on another server which displays a map of the Dundee area. An orange square with a number one in it shows the location of Raglan Street. This map can be zoomed out to encompass Eastern Europe or zoomed in to an enlarged view of Raglan Street Anyone from outside the district clicking this button will be directed right to our door.
4. The Homepage header contains all the relevant information a person searching for the RBLS Dundee City Branch would require namely:
Directions
Branch Secretary's Address
Times of Meeting
Recognised Charity Number
E-mail access
5. On the top right hand side of the hompage is a button marked Send E-mail clicking on this button in both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator will bring up a blank e-mail form with the RBLS e-mail address on it, ready for the person to send an e-mail to the Branch.
6. Under the RBLS Badge on the left-hand side of the homepage is a column headed Links in this column there are a number of sub-headings for example The British Army clicking on this subheading will then take you to the homepage of The British Army and so on.
7. Under the RBLS Badge on the right-hand side of the homepage is a column headed A Peek at History underneath which is a couple of precis links, clicking on these links will provide information for example on the Dyle Offensive and Hitlers plans for the disposal of the UK populace.
8. The inner left-hand yellow column has headings for Diary Dates and Local News with precis links, these again are self evident.
9. The yellow right-hand column has headings for RBLS and precis subheadings describing the history
and description of the Legion Standard, this could also be used for other RBLS information.
It is also headed Photograph Album and it is proposed that this could be used for photos asscociated
with local legion events or members sharing photo memories.
10. It is proposed to use the top central yellow area as a mini memorial to our fallen & deceased comrades this incorporates a photo of the Remebrance Plaque which lies in the Garden of Remembrance outside St. Mary's in the Nethergate. The date shown in this are will change automaticaly every day and the greeting will rotate through Good Morning, Good Afternoon and Good Evening each day, dependant on the time of day.
11. There are two undefined areas, these can be allocated to some purpose or deleted for the time being.
12. The site also has a Web Counter. This shows the number of visitors that have visited the site and the number of visitors that are on line at any one time when the site is opened. It also records technical information about visitors such as:
The operating system they used
The Browser they used
Their Screen Resolution (eg 800x600 or 1024x768)
Their colour pallette (16 bit or 32 bit)
This information is important to the webmaster as it allows him to set the page for thewidest
possible audience.
The counter does not record personal information
13 An Intenet Site supplied by a host, can be seen as a book and the homepage of that site as the
contents page. The contents page via a series of links allows access to all other pages of that book
and to other books on the internet
The number of pages a book contains depends on the amount of space allocated by the Internet Host
company. In our case the amount of space allocated is 100 Mb i.e. 100,000,000 bytes of information.
Our book at the moment comprises eight pages and uses less than 1,000,000 bytes of information we
therefore have in excess of 99,000,000 bytes of space available to us.
14. Once a site is set up it is submited to a Search Engine(s) which will list the site. A Search Engine is a device which holds, quite literally, millions of sites in its records. The site engine will list the site by name but the site may also be called by using keyword(s) for example, in our case, the keywords may be Scotland, Dundee, Legion, British Legion etc., these of course will list other items associate with the keyword but among those items should be found our site.
Of course the easiest way to find the site is to use its Web Address or URL and in our case this is:
Typing this into any webrowser e.g. Internet Explorer or Netscape will bring up the page.
