About Damas
SPOILER WARNING.
Damas is the tough but fair king of the Wasteland city of Spargus. In the harsh life of the desert, Damas respects strength, determination and great spirit; things which he embodies and expects others to do the same. This may make he seem intolerant of slight weakness and perhaps even uncaring as to others' fates. In truth, Damas cares a great deal for his people, though he finds it hard to express such emotions. He admits to Jak that keeping people alive and full of hope is a daunting task for him.
Damas used to be the ruler of Haven City, during the Metal Head Wars. However, he was betrayed by Baron Praxis and banished to the Wasteland. In the course of this, his son, Mar, was taken away by Count Veger and hidden from him. This child was rescued by the Underground, and, as players of Jak II will know, is really the young Jak before he was sent back in time to Sandover. Damas founded a city in the desert, named Spargus, as a refuge for others who were exiled from Haven City. This is the cause of Damas's dislike of Haven City an dit's people, as he sees them as cowards. He ordered Sig, a loyal wastelander, to act as a spy in Haven City (during the course of Jak II), in the attempt to find his son.
This proud man develops a strong relationship with Jak throughout Jak 3, seeing him almost as a substitute for the son he lost. Jak, in turn, sees Damas as the father he never knew. This is quite the coincidence, as Jak is the son that Damas lost. When Damas comes to support Jak during a dangerous mission in Haven City, the vehicle overturns, pinning Damas underneath. While he lies dying in Jak's arms, he reveals that his son is the young boy and that the boy's name is Mar. He asks Jak to find his son. Jak realises that Damas is his father just as Damas dies. It is doubtful Damas knew about Jak before he died.
Why Damas?
I found Damas to be such a likeable character and, for what character development he had from not being a main character, I found him to be one of the more believable personalities. He does what he has to in order to survive and for his people to survive. He has to make hard decisions and I find I admire his ability to do so on such a daily basis. He does what he thinks is right and he stands up for what he believes in. As a survivor, he is tough and strong. He believes strongly in paving his own way; creating his own destiny. But he also shows signs of weakness. He admits it is hard to keep others full of hope and he often shows worry and concern for the people of Spargus.
Unlike most leaders, he doesn't proclaim to know everything and he has his own personal concerns, away from matters of leadership. He becomes something of a mentor and father to Jak. He searches for his son and, though he finds it difficult to express, he shows much pride in his warriors. It's not all sunshine and rainbows with Damas, however. It's his flaws that also help shape him into a well-rounded and brilliant character. His strong ideals and a high expectation of all those around him cause him to be quite threatening to weaker inividuals and to have lack of understanding and compasssion in most cases.
So basically, despite his rough exterior and stern mindset, Damas is just such a great leader, father and friend to those around him, that you can't help but admire him.
