Fiona Hutchison is Dial M for Murder
Fiona Hutchison: "Dial Tone"
Star Track: Life After Soaps
SOW: June 1995
The thriller Dial "M" For Murder may be set in the 1950's, but it's plot is eerily topical. "Strangely enough, the parallel between the O.J. Simpson case and the play is extremely similar," says Fiona Hutchison (ex-Jenna Bradshaw, GL; Gabrielle Medina, OLTL), who is starring in the Pasadena (Calif.) Playhouse stage production of the classic drama, through June 19th. "It's very off because of the plotting -- killing one's wife. That's what goes on in Dial 'M" for Murder, and if one were to believe a certain scenario with O.J.., then...."
Hutchison plays Margot Wendice, a woman who's husband, Tony (Neil Dickson), hires a killer to do away with her. Things go awry, however, when Margot inadvertently kills the man hired to murder her. "Margot has a little money, which Tony stand to inherit," she elaborates. :She's also having an affair (with Michael Spound's Max). That's the trigger; it's partly why her husband decides to do away with her. It's the old double standard -- it's all right for a man to have an affair but as soon as the woman decides to do so it's grounds for murder."
Hutchison finds her character intriguing. "She's not a demure innocent thing. Obviously, she's capable of carrying on affair. Any of us who have ever done that knows it takes a bit of doing."
To prepare for the role, Hutchison "did alot of research into the era. The time was 1953, which I don't know well because I wasn't around," she laughs. "Margot's not a 1990's woman. She's more feminine -- womanly. That's the most difficult thing for me to play, because I'm extremely independent and I handle all my own problems."
The more physically challenging part of the play is the scene in which Les Gare (Michael Halsey) attempts to kill her. "There's a huge struggle, which is quite scary, because I get choked on-stage, " she says. "While it's choreographed, it's still frightening."
Hutchison is well aware that the late Grace Kelly portrayed Margot in the 1953 Alfred Hitchcock directed film version. Yet, Hutchison insists that she not about to mirror Kelly's performance. "Even though the story is the same in the movie and the play, what makes my character tick from beginning to end is slightly different (from what made Kelly's Margot tick in the film), " she notes. "Besides, I want to make this character my own."
