Viki comforts Gabrielle at the hospital but Brenda and Larry don't have anything postive about Steve to report; he's likely to remain in the coma permanently.

Max comes in while Gabrielle is with Steve.  He's back to the keeping at arms, actually rooms, length stance.  He tells her they can never be together again because of Steve  and now he can't even be in the same room with her so she leaves, disconsolate.  As Max reads to Steve he opens his diary and realizes that the writing in it is different from the infamous "letter" that he later studies at his Penthouse.

Gabrielle tells the gaurd she'll be with Steve and he can take a coffee break.  A highly emotional and distraught Gabrielle tearfully tells Steve that she can't go on like this any more, with him in limbo, never coming back but not letting her get on with her life.  She tearfully tells him while cradling a pillow that it's best for him if he just goes then all of them will be released from this suffering.... she presses down... her cries and tears escalate... then she looks down at her hands horrified and pulls the pillow away... she sobs at his side that she's sorry, she begs for him to wake up just to please wake up....  Max enters the room, scowling that he's on to her.... Gabrielle jumps up frightened.

Max drags a confused and resistant Gabrielle back to her house.  He's beyond furious and goes on the attack, she's afraid he heard what she was telling Steve but it's almost worse, he knows she wrote "the letter" and that their entire night together was based on a lie.  She tries to explain why she did it and Max is (unbelievably) actually shocked to hear it's because she's still in love with him, that it's always been him and never Steve. He shouts that there will never be anything in between them, that she sickens him and he storms out as she lays on the stairs and sobs.

Gabrielle tells Tina that she's lost Max's friendship and any chance at love, and that it's all her fault, that her manipulations have come back to haunt her and she deserves to be alone.  Tina tries to ells her that everything will be all right, that she just needs time to get her life back together, maybe a cruise with her.  Gabrielle, chin up,  wipes away her tears, says she's not much in a cruise state of mind but reassures a worried Tina that she'll be OK.

As Max broods alone in his hotel room Gabrielle walks though her house, almost in a fog... until she reaches into a desk drawer and takes out a bottle of pills, tears silently streaming down her face.
