| Gabrielle
and Max laugh over his handling of the dockworkers in Philadelphia and
she impulsively hugs him but quickly withdraws. Later, she calls
Steve and is happily chirping to him on the phone, but then she makes the
mistake of mentioning how Max is hurting over the breakup with Tina and
Lee's recent death, and how maybe he needs a friend now. Steve orders
her to comes home immediately and says if she doesn't he'll go to PA and
drag her home. Gabrielle is enraged and shaken.
Later at Lee's funeral, Max is upset that Gabrielle didn't go straight home to Steve. She says she didn't feel like being ordered around, and besides he needed a friend with him and they should go out and toast Lee. Many toastings later, Max brings a giggling and tipsy Gabrielle home. She drops her keys and the door opens... "ooh, look shoes.... (she looks up) Steve!" But Steve isn't happy to see her, he goes off about what a horrid wife and mother she is and rants at Max about the kind of plans he had for his wife after getting her smashed! Gabrielle, almost immediately sober through anger, decides to check on Al upstairs. |

The next morning, after Steve spends the night on the couch, Gabrielle comes down and kisses Al good morning. Steve wants to talk, he's sorry the house and ranch in AZ is so ramshackle, so he decides that Gabrielle should sell her house in Llanview and put it into the ranch. She says he needs it for her business but he doesn't want her to have that anymore either! He tells her to pack her bags they're going home. Later, Gabrielle comes down and says he hasn't packed her bags and she's not selling her house or her business. Steve whines that she has no conficence in him making a success of the ranch. She says it's not her dream. He gets angry and says he wants them to be a family and he's going to adopt Al and he's already made up the paperwork for it! She's furious and tells him he has no right to make all this unilateral decisions, that his dream isn't hers and Al is Max's son! She tries to leave put he grabs her arms until she shouts that he's hurting her! Gabrielle, runs into Max and he sees the bruises on her arms. She tells him that Steve has made plans to adopt Al without consulting her and she's tired of this 1800's macho garbage. Max though decides he'll straighten out Steve and much to Gabrielle's chagrin he does just that and Steve decides to sell the ranch and move to PA if it means keeping Gabrielle. (Gabrielle though doesn't want to be kept, well not be Steve and topedoes the sale with the real estaste lady. Steve finds out and Gabrielle tells him she doesn't want himgiving up his dream for her and it won't work, she wants a divorce) |

After Max has a grueling day on the witness stand at Lee's trial Gabrielle brings over Al to cheer him up. But Max becomes upset when he learns that Gabrielle left Steve, he wants her to give Steve yet another chance. He goes on and on about their love and making it work until Gabrielle can't take it anymore and blurts out that there's only one man she's ever loved and it's Max not Steve! Max is flabbergasted and says that what they had was just a few months, that they're family now but nothing remains of their past. Gabrielle laughs and picks up Al and says "Nothing?" She wants to know why he can keep telling her to give Steve chance after chance and yet he won't give her one so they can be a family? Max says that any chance of their being lovers again ended when she married Steve (good point!). But he says they can still be family and best friends. (Ouch) She tells him to stuff it and not to bother, she won't beg for his love again (well not immeadiately! LOL) Gabrielle returns home to Steve (AKA the Holden backup plan) and tells him he doesn't have to sell the ranch, that she wants him to adopt Al and they'll go home to AZ after she sells the house. On hearing about the adoption plans Tina trots over to Gabrielle's and tells her that Max loves Al and to stop playing the brothers against each other. |
