Guiding Light's Fiona Hutchison
TV GEN Site Bulletin Board Q&A with FH answers 1/31/97
By Michael Logan - Sysop: Linda Knights
The Brit is back! And she's making Guiding Light shine much more brightly these days. There are a lot of reasons to be optimistic about this struggling 60-year-old sudser -- new writers, new producers and the return of several beloved characters -- but it's the reteaming of Fiona Hutchison (as ex-jewel thief Jenna Bradshaw) and Justin Deas (as greasy-spooner Buzz Cooper) that really proves you can go home again.  Are we talking great chemistry or what? Their recent scenes at the Springfield airport were just about the most lushly romantic moments ever seen on daytime (though the mood, we admit, was shattered when we found ourselves shouting at the screen: "Jenna! Don't get on that plane,  you bloody idiot!"). In fact, this sly, sexy duo is so electric we even forgive GL for force-feeding us that Buzz and Reva hooey for months and months (and months). It was worth the wait! And speaking of waiting,  don't. Fiona has agreed to answer all your queries -- so start posting!

If not Buzz, then who???

It is really great having you back on  Guiding Light. You are family! My question: if Jenna doesn't get involved right away with Buzz, who then would Ms. Bradshaw set her sights on?

Well, you know, there's quite a lot of good-looking men. I think Hart is quite yummy. And there was a history with Hart, so I think that would be very interesting. Then of course there is the part that Kurt plays, Kurt McKinney. We had a couple of scenes together already which went very well. Oh, I think Jenna's open-minded. I think if you're male and you've got an interest in her she'll have an interest in you.

Magnetic presence and sure-fire instincts aside, what experience do you bring to the role?

I told you, I'm a jewel thief! Nobody believes me. Actually -- twelve years of acting and good acting teachers and good theater roles and things like that. I suppose I try to bring as much as I can to it, the main key being believable, I hope. That's what I strive for. Do you believe what I do? If you believe what I do, then I've done my job. That's really what the name of the game is every day -- just try to make it believable.

And how did you stretch your dramatic talents while on hiatus from GL?

I did a feature film with Roddy MacDowall and Robert Wagner which will be out this year called “Something to Believe In.”   I did another film called  “Prey of the Jaguar” with Maxwell Caulfield and another film opposite Stacy Keach. I did three plays. I just won a Dramalogue award for  “Three More Sleepless Nights”   I did a TV series in Australia. I kept pretty busy. I worked up until eight months of pregnancy. I was on stage every night till the end of my eighth month. And he arrived on time so I was pregnant for 10 months, and then I started working six weeks after he was born. I flew to Australia to do the TV show. So I've been pretty busy, luckily. I'm very, very lucky, because I know that many times people leave a very visible show. But I was lucky. I was working the first week off the show. And I worked for the two years with the exception of a few months off to have Hutch.

I just want to add my welcome home! I'm glad you're back where you belong! I was wondering what character has been your favorite to play?

Thank you! There was a role I played on stage recently in  "Dial M for Murder."  It was the Grace Kelly role. That was an incredible role. It was very difficult to play, but I did enjoy it. I don't have a favorite role. Every new role that comes along -- of which I do hope there will be others -- I just enjoy wrapping my teeth around different roles.

I loved you as Gabrielle on OLTL!  Do you enjoy playing the villainess?

That part of Gabrielle was a lot of fun, and I do enjoy playing the villainess. It's the shock value of a character like that that's fun. When you're shocking people and you know you're shocking people, that side of a character is fun to play. But I don't miss the really dark, dark, really demonic side of her, which was a little scary. That I don't miss. But I do miss the shock value and that sort of thing.

If you had a dream role what would it be?

You know, I'm sure there is a role out there that if somebody said, "Would you like to play such-and-such?" I would jump at it in a second. But at the moment -- I suppose I should say Jenna! The truth is, no matter who or what I'm playing at the time is what I want to be doing. Right now, I have no longings to play anybody else while I'm playing Jenna. The day may come when I'm ready to play somebody else. For those who have known me, I do tend to get to a certain point when I want to go do something else. That does happen with me. But at the moment I'm very happy playing Jenna.

And are you still dancing?

I'm not dancing at the moment, but I'm getting back into it for my own exercise and my own pleasure. But four months after having had a baby -- no, it's a bit difficult to put pointe shoes on and look like Twinkletoes.

How long have you been in show business?

I got involved in '85, so this is my 12th year.

Do you have any idols or people you would like to work with?

I'd love to work with Glenn Close and I'd love to work with Hugh Grant. Who wouldn't?

How did you feel on your first day back on the set?

Full of excitement. It was like being on location with a new job, because there are many new faces. It's only been two years, but there have been many changes. I walked on to the actual set and the crew gave me a round of applause and that made me feel very welcomed, very loved. But there were some new faces, too, so I feel as though I'm working a new job, because it's not the same old Guiding Light by any means. I think the energy level is much higher. I think it's very much due to Paul Rauch being at the helm. I like the feeling of the show -- it's the reason I came back. I had a hunch that it would be like this and I was right. It's a very exciting atmosphere now, like it's moving, like it's going places. When I left, the show was very lackluster in energy.

Who are your buddies at work?

Justin Deas is a buddy. Michael Zaslow is a great buddy. I'd known him for probably eight or nine years before I even came to work on Guiding Light.  Marj Dusay is a buddy. Kim Zimmer is a buddy. I knew her, also, before we were working together. Frank Dicopoulos is a buddy. I think just about all the people -- and I've made some new friends, too. Jennifer Roszell, who plays Eleni -- I think she's a lovely person. Michael O'Leary -- I know him from way back when. So there isn't a single person that I don't have good things to say about. It's an extremely good crew, and you can't say that about every show. I mean, even at old One Life to Live, there were a few sour apples in the bunch, and that show is sort of known for that.  But Guiding Light-- I don't know, it must be the karma of the show, but they seem to always have a magnet for very good actors who are good people as well.

What were your favorite scenes that you were in on your last stint at GL?

I remember a bathtub scene with Michael Zaslow which was fun. We had a lot of giggles over that one. My pasties -- what we call pasties, to put on your breasts to be decent while you're sitting there in this tub -- kept falling off, and he was quite a gentleman about it. But you can only do scenes like that with people you've known for years and can have a good giggle about it. So I remember that being fun, and I remember a love scene that Justin and I did in the back of a car or something that was the most uncomfortable scene we've ever done. We talked about it the other day. But it was a lot of fun. We found it to be quite hysterically funny even though it was meant to be romantic and mushy. Love scenes in the back of old Chevys are not very comfortable. But we had a lot of giggles over it.

I'm glad to see you're back on the show! How are you the same and different than the character that you play? (Of course I'm sure you're not an ex-jewel thief.

Oh, that's where you're wrong -- I am an ex-jewel thief! Absolutely! World-renowned! No one's caught me yet. No, I don't know. There is one fundamental difference. Jenna's come onto the scene with a two-year-old child and sent the two-year-old child off with the nanny back to England while she gets on with her jewel thievery and deciding whether or not she's going to tell Buzz about the baby. Now it's all paved with good intentions, but quite frankly in my own life I would never let my son out of my sight. That's the difference. I think Jenna is a little bit more cavalier. Her circumstances, obviously, have dictated that she has to be that way. But I would have kept that child right beside me every step of the way. That's where I'm different.

Al" Needs You and So Do We !

Fiona -- rumors were rampant about your return to One Life To Live. The viewers loved you as the evil Gabrielle Medina. Did you even consider returning to the show?

I more than considered it. I had lunch with Maxine Levinson, who's now the executive producer of One Life to Live, last year while I was pregnant. We talked very much about my return as Gabrielle. We talked about story line, we talked about the fact that they would wait till I had delivered the baby and then we would talk again. So yes, I really thought that I was going to be on One Life to Live in 1997 rather than Guiding Light. But this is when Paul Rauch stepped into the equation and he came up to the plate with a game plan that they could not match.

Which character do you like playing better, Jenna or Gabrielle?

It's very difficult to compare. They're total opposites. Jenna is very vibrant and has a sense of humor and a wit about her, whereas Gabrielle is very dark, demonic, evil. But I felt very sorry for her. Obviously, to play a character like that you have to find the reasons why she's like that. I don't truly have a preference. They are so at the opposite ends of the scale.

Do you still keep up with any cast members on your former show?

Oh yes, very much so: Bobby Woods, I'm still very much in touch with. And the Buchanans -- pretty much all of them. I have some good friends on that show. Also, the makeup artist, Renata Long. She and I are very good friends. She's coming over for tea.

Welcome Back Fiona

Will we be seeing more of Jenna interacting with the other residents of Springfield along with Buzz?

I think so. I hope so. I would imagine so, particularly with the jewel thieving. She's bound to rub shoulders with other people.

Why did you leave the show and what made you decide to come back?

At the time Jill Farren Phelps was the producer, and she was very, very kind and very generous, offering to have me stay on and do a deal. But at the time, my husband had been offered a job with the Walt Disney Company in California, and it was one of those things -- if we didn't give my husband a shot at doing what he wanted to do... I felt that it was the time. I'd had a good run. When you're in a partnership you sort of have to weigh, "Whose turn is it?" -- that kind of thing. So we went to California so he could work at Disney. And then hence, he went over to Warner Bros. and is still working at Warner Bros. and having a great time. I was given the opportunity to do a couple of different films and some theater and I won a Dramalogue award, so it turned out pretty good for me, too.

I came back primarily because of Paul Rauch, whom I've worked with before. I admire him as a producer within the industry, not just daytime. I think he's a tremendously good producer in television as well as feature films. I've always loved working with him. I've always admired him. And to be quite honest, between him and my agent, Harry Abrams, I could not say no. It was a very persuasive, inviting deal. They've made me feel tremendously welcome.

Everyone is so glad you are back! The show needs some sparkle and that is you. Where do you get all your energy?

Isn't that nice! Getting pregnant and having a healthy baby was one of the healthiest things that could have happened to me as a person. I find that getting pregnant did wonderful things for my own system. You know how nature has a way of putting things to right? None of us eat right. None of us do the right thing in general. And when you get pregnant, you are so forced to eat the right things because your body won't accept certain things -- like potato chips. It depends on your pregnancy, but in my case, I craved a tremendous amount of protein and dairy products and all those wonderful things that give you a tremendous amount of energy. And I've stayed on that kick. I've also realized that I haven't had a drop of alcohol in probably a year and a half, and I drink eight to 10 glasses of water and milk a day. I am so cleaned out, my system is so pure, through the pregnancy and now after the pregnancy, that I think that has a lot to do with it. I have a lot more energy now than I did before I got pregnant. I recommend it highly. (There's a little lack of sleep problem going on, for some reason!) I also take minerals, colloidal minerals, which I believe in very, very strongly.
