Buzz and Jeffrey are seen by a maid in the early morning hours arguing in Jeffrey's hotel room. She overhears Buzz say, "If you don't leave Coop and Jenna alone you'll regret it." The maid moves on. Two hours later she comes back to clean the room and finds Jeffrey's body on the floor shot to death. Later that morning Buzz and Jenna are at the firehouse reading the papers about a series of jewel heists that are currently taking place in Springfield. The Spauldings and Grants have been robbed of many valuable jewels but there has been a strange twist in each of the robberies. Although all of the jewelry has been stolen only one antique, usually an heirloom, was taken from each house and that antique was the most valuable available. In the most recent robbery which occurred at the Spaulding mansion, a goblet known as the Borgia Goblet was taken. Its value was in the millions. Jenna comments that she thinks she knows the thief's name. Buzz asks, "How do you know who it is?" Jenna explains that while she and Jeffrey were plying their trade in Europe there was also another successful thief, a competitor, known as the Appraiser. He was called this because his signature style was always stealing only the most valuable antique or heirloom in the house while taking all of the jewelry. She adds that no one has ever seen his face. Back at the hotel Frank is conducting the investigation of Jeffrey's murder. From the description that the maid gives him, Frank has the sinking feeling that she is describing his father. He reaches into his back pocket and pulls out his wallet and shows the maid a picture of Buzz. She cries out, "That's him. That's the murderer!"
Jenna Solves A Mystery: Chapter 2
Jenna and Buzz are still at the firehouse discussing the jewel robberies when the door opens and Frank is standing there with two uniformed policemen. Frank comes in and appears very agitated. Buzz jumps up and says with much excitement, "Jenna has some information that I'm sure you'll be interested in that has to do with these jewel robberies!" Frank doesn't pay any attention. He clears his throat and says, "Dad I have to warn you, anything you say can be held against you......" and he proceeds to read Buzz his Miranda rights. Buzz is dumbfounded. "What the hell is going on?" Frank replies, "Jeffrey Morgan was murdered this morning and you were the last and only person seen with him. You were positively IDed by a maid. Dad I am going to have to take you in as the prime suspect in this murder." Jenna puts her hands up to her face and cries out. The policeman get on either side of Buzz and Frank motions for them to take him out. Jenna screams, "You can't do this to your own father..... Frank....." As Buzz is marched out he tells Jenna to get Griffin over to the police station right away. Jenna who is in shock nods her agreement and watches as the men all leave. Jenna immediately heads for Griffin's office. After she arrives she pleads with him to go to Buzz. But Griffin is not cooperating. He tells Jenna he is not a criminal lawyer and that Buzz would be in much better hands with a true defense attorney. Jenna tells him Buzz trusts him and wants him. Griffin shakes his head and looks down. He really doesn't want to do it. He is afraid he might make a critical mistake in a motion or plea that would hurt Buzz. Jenna begs. Griffin finally agrees and they both head for the court house. Court Room 15 is one of the smaller ones, mainly used for bail hearings and traffic offenses.. Buzz is sitting at the defense table with Griffin. ADA Robinson is at the other table telling the judge that Buzz should be held without bail. He explains that Buzz is the prime suspect and since Buzz has a prior record he should not be given bail. As Robinson is pleading his cause Griffen is pouring over some legal books and frantically turning pages and taking notes. He look flustered and worried. Jenna is seated in the court room directly behind Buzz. She tries to give him a timid smile of encouragement but Buzz is in a daze. Finally, Robinson is through with his presentation. The judge looks at Griffin. Griffin gets up. His hands are shaking. He clears his throat. He begins to speak.
Jenna Solves A Mystery: Chapter 3
As Griffin begins to speak he stumbles a bit, but he soon gets into stride. As he gains confidence his argument becomes more forceful. His main thrust is that Buzz is being held on the flimsiest of circumstantial evidence. The only item against him is the hotel maid's statement that she saw him in the room and heard him threaten Jeffrey. Other than that there is nothing . There is no physical evidence tying him to the scene of the crime. No weapon has been recovered. Griffin glances at ADA Robinson and says scornfully, "It is our contention that Buzz Cooper should be released now. No bail. No anything. The State has nothing substantial that shows my client having anything to do with this horrible crime. Your honor, I respectfully request that Buzz Cooper be set free with no conditions." The Judge looks at ADA Robinson and says, " I am inclined to agree with defense counsel unless you have some additional evidence that hasn't yet been presented." Robinson slumps in his chair and says, "We have nothing further to add, your honor." "Fine. Here is my ruling. Mr. Cooper, please stand. It is the verdict of this court that you be set free with the following conditions. One, that you cooperate fully with the police in this investigation and make yourself available whenever necessary; and two, that you not leave the city of Springfield without the courts permission. Is this agreeable to your client, counsel?" Griffin smiles and answers, "You bet! I mean, excuse me your honor, yes my client agrees to everything." The judge suppresses a smile and says, "Court adjourned." Jenna rushes to Buzz's side and the three of them, Griffin, Buzz and Jenna embrace. Later at the firehouse Buzz, Jenna, Frank and Eleni are talking over the events of the day. Frank explains that he has been taken off the murder case because of an obvious conflict of interest; but that he is still heading up the jewel robbery investigation. Buzz urges Jenna to tell Frank what she knows about the "Appraiser" which she does. She also suggests that Frank contact Interpol since they have been searching for this notorious thief for years. As the evening winds down, Frank comments to Jenna that when these robberies started she was his primary suspect. But when he found that she had airtight alibies for all the nights in question he was relieved. "Well thank you Frank," Jenna says," it's nice to know you weren't disappointed." Everyone laughs and Frank and Eleni leave. Buzz and Jenna are now alone. Jenna looks at Buzz and says quietly, "Buzz, I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but I have to ask you this question. I will believe whatever answer you give me." Buzz stares at her and says, "Are you going to ask me if I killed Jeffrey?" Jenna nods her head. Buzz looks down.
Jenna Solves A Mystery: Chapter 4
Buzz looks into Jenna's eyes and whispers, "Do you think I killed Jeffrey?" Jenna sighs and says, "No Buzz I don't. I know you are incapable of killing someone in cold blood. Even a bounder like Jeffrey." "Well you're right. I must have left Jeffrey's room minutes after that maid saw me. I only went to try and reason with him. But it was no use. As I left he shouted at me that he would never let you and Coop go." Jenna puts her hands on Buzz's shoulders and says, "Buzz we have had an exhausting day. Lets go to bed and try to put everything back together tomorrow." So arms wrapped around each other they head up the stairs to bed. The next morning Jenna is up before Buzz as it is one of her days at Cedars. After her community service concluded, Jenna decided to stay on as a volunteer working primarily in the psychiatric ward and the children's wing. One of the most troubling cases in the psychiatric wing was Annie Dutton. Jenna remembered meeting her at a dress shop just before the Cedars 60th Anniversary Ball and at that time she was a vibrant, happy person talking about having Josh's baby and being so happy with him. Now she was in a semi-comatose state muttering to the four walls of her room, "We could have been so happy with our baby. Oh Josh---Oh Josh....." Her prognosis was poor. The other patient that Jenna thought really strange was a man named Rauch who kept talking about great romances, signature couples and focus groups. One of his quirks was to sneak up to Annie's room and peer in the door and say to anyone who would listen, "That girl in there is a real sparkplug. Yes sir, a real sparkplug!!" "Hello Jenna." Jenna turns from the coffee machine in the lounge to see Rick Bauer standing there. "Hello Rick," she answers. "You know Jenna I am getting great reports on you from the administrator in the children's wing." Jenna blushes. Rick goes on. "You know Jenna you really remind me of someone. There was a nurse who worked here for a short while a few years back named Molly Patterson* and you are a dead ringer for her. In fact you two could be twins. She left after a short time. I remember her telling me that you only have one life to live and she was going to live it to the fullest. Well, see you later." As Jenna walks down the hall she ponders what has happened in the last 24 hours and it takes her breath away. Note: * Nurse Molly Patterson was the first role that Fiona Hutchison played on GL. She left to play Gabrielle on One Life To Live.
Jenna Solves A Mystery: Chapter 5
Jenna returns to the firehouse after her busy day at Cedars. As she enters the main room she sees Buzz, Frank and a stranger sitting around the table. On seeing Jenna the stranger politely rises from his chair and nods towards her. Buzz and Frank look at each other and then stumble to their feet with Buzz knocking over his chair as he gets up. Jenna frowns at Buzz. Frank says to Jenna, "Jenna I would like to introduce you to Inspector Mark Leyland of Scotland Yard. He arrived here this morning and he is the resident expert at Interpol on the Appraiser." Jenna steps forward and extends her hand. Leyland reaches for it and as their hands touch a spark flies from a static charge of electricity. They both jump back and laugh. Leyland extends his hand again and Jenna takes it. She notices that he is an extremely handsome man. Buzz watching this exchange looks concerned. Since they are both British they begin to talk about England. They become so engrossed in the conversation that Buzz and Frank get the feeling they are intruders. Finally Frank seeing his father's discomfort interrupts and explains to Jenna why he has brought Leyland to see her. Since Jenna knows about the Appraiser and his style Frank thought the two of them should compare notes. Leyland looks at Jenna and says, "You are not unknown to me Miss Bradshaw. I have studied your files and you were one of the very, very best at your unique trade." He pauses for a moment. "Retired, I take it." Jenna reddens and answers emphatically, "Permanently." Leyland shoots back, "Pity. I would have enjoyed tracking down such a worthy and beautiful adversary." Jenna blushes and Buzz gets red. Jenna explains to Leyland that she has been thinking all day about what Jeffrey explained to her concerning the Appraiser and his habits. She tells him that Jeffrey once told her about a distinctive mannerism that the Appraiser would display on certain occasions, but that for the life of her she could not remember what it was. Leyland says, "I have been following his escapades for years and I know of no mannerisms." Jenna smiles and says, "I am absolutely certain there is something. It will come to me, at least I hope it will." They continue discussing things until Frank suggests that he and Leyland leave. Leyland rises and reaches for Jenna's hand. While he holds it he looks into her eyes and says huskily, "Mr. Cooper is a very fortunate man to have such a lovely, intelligent and charming companion." Jenna turns red and says demurely, "Why thank you, Mr. Leyland." Leyland smiles and says,"Mark, call me Mark." Buzz is beside himself and says loudly, "OK MARK it has been nice. Goodnight!" Frank and Leyland leave. Buzz glares at Jenna. "What was that all about?" Jenna tries to make light of Buzz's comment. "I haven't the slightest idea of what you are talking about." Buzz shouts, "OH COME ON, I know when you are playing your 'I am such a lovely lady act!!'" Jenna says quietly, "Oh Buzz, you know I love only you." Buzz grabs his jacket and heads for the door saying, "Sometimes I wonder!"
Jenna Solves A Mystery: Chapter 6
Jenna is sitting with Eleni and Michelle in a booth at the diner. Buzz is behind the counter with little Coop. He is letting Coop play with all the levers and Coke and Sprite are spilling out everywhere. Jenna looks at all this and smiles. "You know men are really funny." Eleni nods in firm agreement and adds, "Especially Greek men. They are so volatile." Michelle chimes in with, "I would add something but I don't know any men well enough to make a comment." Jenna and Eleni laugh. Jenna responds, "I've told you before, quit putting yourself down. You are a beautiful girl who just hasn't met the right gentleman." Jenna pauses and then continues, "What I was thinking about when I said men are funny is that they always want to think so logically. They never make leaps of faith, or trust their instincts. They are very tunneled vision in my opinion. Take the jewel robberies and Jeffrey's murder for example. No one as far as I know has connected the two." Eleni jumps in with, "Frank told me they have tried to link the two but there is no physical evidence to tie them together." Jenna responds, "That's just my point. No physical evidence, no link. But I say there is a link. Jeffrey was a jewel thief and the Appraiser is a jewel thief. For all we know they could have been working together and Jeffrey somehow crossed the Appraiser and then......" Buzz has come over to the table with a tray of sandwiches and he plops them down. "From little Coop and me. You can tell the ones he made. They are much neater then mine." He leaves. Eleni picks up a sandwich and turns to Jenna. "You know Frank also told me they found an unidentified body by the river bank. It had been badly burned as if someone were trying to hide the identity. The hands were completely destroyed. Frank says this was done so that there would be no fingerprints." "Hmm....," Jenna mutters, "perhaps that dead body has something to do with all this." "Frank doesn't think so. He thinks it's probably some vagrant who was killed and then tossed into the river." "But then why was the body burned?" "Frank says that happens all the time. Especially with vagrants. The killer thinks it will delay the identification while he leaves town." "I don't know, Eleni, there is something very strange going on here." Just then the door to the diner opens and in comes Mark Leyland. Jenna smiles a hello and Buzz looks daggers at him. "Well," Mark says to the girls, "I seem to have made the right choice for a late breakfast. May I sit down." They clear a spot for him and he sits next to Jenna. She introduces him to Eleni and Michelle. Buzz can be seen behind the counter stuffing all the breakfast menus into a drawer. Leyland look at Jenna and says, "You know, I think we finally have stumbled onto a lead in the Appraiser case and it looks quite promising."
Jenna Solves A Mystery: Chapter 7
"You know I think of you as a colleague in this god forsaken city." Leyland is speaking to Jenna. "Oh I don't think of it as god forsaken at all,." she replies. "Oh, how so?" Jenna looks behind the counter where Coop is now sticking his finger in Buzz's eye. " It is the only place I have ever been where I have been completely happy." Tears well up in Michelle's eyes as she sees the complete sincerity behind Jenna's statement. Leyland clears his throat and changes the subject, "That is a beautiful cameo that you are wearing on your lapel." "Yes," Jenna replies, "I have had it ever since I can remember. My mother told me it was a link to the past." "Whatever did she mean by that?" "I really don't know. I guess she meant it was part of my heritage. She just told me to always cherish it, which I have. I don't wear it much since the hasp doesn't exactly work the way it should." "Well it is lovely. If I were you I would keep it in a safe place. You never know when the Appraiser may strike again." Jenna looks at Leyland and says, "You mentioned that you had a promising lead...." "Yes. But it requires a little bit of ingenuity to get to the bottom of my theory. You see several months before the robberies began an antique dealer opened up a new store on, I believe River Street, yes, it was River Street. His name is Anton Weigler. We have run an extensive check on him but we have turned up nothing. He seems to be a perfectly legitimate businessman with nothing in his past which would indicate any wrong doing. But I have a hunch. You know I always act on my hunches. It is silly to be logical all of the time. Sometimes you just have to trust your instincts." Michelle's eyes open wide at this and she blurts out, "Were you listening to Jenna a few minutes ago?" Leyland replies, "Why no. I just got here if you remember." Michelle puts her hands up to her cheeks and says, "Then you two must be telepathic. Jenna was just saying the same thing before you came in." Jenna laughs and says, "Oh don't be silly Michelle, it's probably because we are both British and think in eccentric ways." Leyland looks at Jenna. "I need your help to prove out my theory. You see with no reason to suspect Weigler except for the fact that he is an expert on antiques, there is no just cause to get a search warrant to enter his premises. And that is where you come in my dear Jenna." "Me! Why whatever do you need me for?" "Your skills, my dear. Your skills"
Jenna Solves A Mystery: Chapter 8
Jenna stares at Leyland. "You can't be serious." Leyland nods to Michelle and says, "I don't wish to hurt your feelings, but if you could leave us alone for a moment I would appreciate it." Michelle turns towards Jenna. "It's all right," says Jenna. Michelle rises and goes to the counter and starts talking to Buzz and Coop. Eleni has already left the table. "I have never been more serious in my life," Leyland said emphatically. "I have been trying to catch this master thief for years and now that he is within my grasp I am not going to let a few legalities stand in my way. I need your help!" Jenna says quietly, "You don't really expect me to commit a crime for you. Or do you?" Leyland laughs. "How can it be a crime if you are doing it for an officer of the law." Jenna sighs. Leyland continues. "You must understand I have to get into a vault that is in the basement of Weigler's shop. I am sure I can find evidence there that will help convict this menace to society. He is a thief and perhaps a murderer, and you, my dear lady, can help bring him to justice." "Just what exactly do you want me to do?" Leyland smiles. "The shop has an extensive security set-up. There is a perimeter system that covers all of the doors and windows. Once inside the shop there are several motion detectors and sensor pads. Finally there is a system protecting the vault. So we have to penetrate three systems to get the evidence I need. And although I know how to track down jewel thieves, I do not have the expertise that you have in bypassing security systems." "And you are sure this man is the Appraiser?" "Yes. I am as sure of this as I am that you are one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen." Jenna turns her head to see Buzz. He is at the end of the counter watching her. He starts to come towards the table but she shakes her head slightly and he stops and continues wiping the counter. "When do you propose breaking in?" Jenna asks. Leyland answers, "Tonight. Weigler is away at an antique buyers convention and he is not scheduled to return until tomorrow night." "And if we get caught?" "I assure you we won't. I have the utmost confidence in your skill. Remember I have studied your files. You are one of the best." Jenna pauses and then says, "I don't want Buzz to know about this." Leyland grins and says, "I certainly am not going to tell him." Jenna asks, "What time?" Leyland looks at her and says, "Then you'll do it." Jenna nods her head slowly. Leyland breathes a sigh of relief and says, "Ten o'clock would be fine. I will meet you in the alley beside the shop on River Street. It should not take more than an hour and then I am sure I will have what I need." Leyland rises and takes Jenna's hand in his own. "It will be rewarding for both of us. Trust me."
