SOM: July 1993
Here's a standing ovation for GL's July 7 episode. For a brief moment, as Buzz was explaining to Jenna why he couldn't go with her to Wyoming (because of his granddaughter's baptism), we saw an entirely different side of the two characters. Usually Buzz and Jenna are great together because they know how to push each other's button. But in that scene, they each showed a new dimension of their characters -- they are warm, human, caring and vulnerable people. Dust off the old clichés, because they apply here: "two peas in a pod," "birds of a feather" and "they've met their match."
Applause, Applause
Fiona Hutchison managed to evoke sympathy for Jenna during her scenes at the Regency Hotel. When she discovered that Roger could have used finagling to gain control of Spaulding, she poured her heart out to Buzz and for the first time showed her human side. Unfortunately the armor was off for a short while before Jenna retreated behind the tough facade she's been comfortable with for so long.
Applause, Applause
Michael Zaslow and Fiona Hutchison did a terrific job acting out the breakup between Roger and Jenna. Jenna was so happy to learn she was pregnant, then her bubble burst when Alexandra proved that Roger deceived Jenna and lied about her father to gain control of Spaulding. Jenna decided to leave him, but Roger begged her to promise to stay until he could redeem himself. She gave him her word, then as soon as he walked out the door, she called for her car. When her maid questioned why she wasn't keeping her promise, Jenna answered, "Roger never kept his word, so why should I?" Beautiful writing and definitely poetic justice.
Applause, Applause
It was a long time coming, but the pairing of Buzz and Jenna on GL was definitely worth the wait. Jenna brings out the romantic, caring side of Buzz -- and as for an exciting romance -- they'll do it anywhere, anytime. Having Jenna work in the pawn shop adds the perfect touch. It's poetic justice for all her thievery in the old days; she has a knack for getting her customers to buy, which makes owner Dottie happy.
Applause, Applause
Kudos to the GL writers for always keeping their options open and viewers on their toes. The recent scenes between Jenna and Vanessa while they shared a drink at the Gazebo were rather surprising and poignant. We expected tension between the two ladies, recalling the time when Jenna believed she was Henry's daughter and caused Vanessa much embarrassment. In a delightful surprise, Jenna raised her glass, and since there was only on, Vanessa hoisted the bottle to her lips as they shared a sip. The memories of their fighting faded as we rooted for these two to find friendship, something both women now need in their lives. |
