| Actor's
egos take a real beating on soaps. To survive, you have to be tough,
talented and adaptable. Take privacy -- at some studios, actors are
forced to shared cramped dressing rooms, make personal calls on a hallway
extension and wait on line yo use the shower.
Some actors makes better "happy campers" than others, perhaps because they got a heavy dose of independence at an early age. ***** The Royal Ballet School in London, a nonsectarian boarding school that
Fiona Hutchison ( Jenna, GL) attended was no less severe. The future
actress found herself the central figure in a series of mishaps.
"I used to instigate the villiage boys to climb over the school walls and
meet their girlfriends," she remembers.
During her two years there, she spent many an afternoon in the headmistress's office. "I really enjoyed getting into trouble because her ofice was the only room in the entire building that was carpeted and had a lovely fireplace," Hutchison laughs. High jinks and other naughtines may seem like harmless fun, but for some, it may be a acry for help. With family nd friends miles away, and stiff rules to follow, some kids just can't cope. Authoritarian schools can seem more like prisons than homes-away-from-home. "I really wanted to be expelled," admits Hutchison. "Yes, I had some fun, but I also had some horrendously bad times." With her parents living overseas in the United States, Hutchison experienced a serious bout of homesickness and stopped eating. "I cried a lot because I was very, very lonely," laments the star, "and I was furious because the school was so strict and medieval. So, I would pull starvation tactics and feed my meal to a cat I had befriended." ***** Hutchison shares that sentiment and vows that if she has kids, they
will never be shipped off to prep school. "I would never send my
child to one, " she declares. "I wish I had spent more time with
my parents, because now they're both gone, and one thinks, 'Maybe it was
silly to leave home at such an early age.'" *
