SPW's "Golden Moments" for Dec 1998
Jenna Dies On GL
1/26/99

Buzz was inconsolable after learning that wife Jenna
died from injuries sustained in a car accident.

Our Best and Worst Issue went to press before Jenna died on Guiding Light, but had it not you can bet the dramatic death scenes would have made it into several categories.  For Instance:

Best Send-Off For A Beloved Character and Actress:

GL didn't kill Jenna one day, then act as if she never existed the next.  Characters grieved for days (and continue to grieve).  Jenna even made another appearance -- in a fantastic, moving episode in which she said a proper good-bye to loved ones.  "She will always be in the hearts and minds of the other characters, because she had such a great impact on their lives," executive producer Rauch says.  "That episode was a way to make that clear to the audience.  It wasn't an angel or a spirit, it was actually Jenna, saying she would be there for them whenever they needed her.  It really gave closure to the whole thing."  Fiona Hutchison looked radiant and was so warm in the scenes -- as she was no doubt also saying good-bye to her friends at GL.

Best Special Effects:

The car crash was staged magnificently, from the way Jenna lost control behind the wheel to the post crash set.  The meticulous attention to the details gave everything a higher sense of urgency,  Didn't you also love how Jenna vanished right after talking to her friends, and how the lighting changed?

Saddest Storyline:

Justin Deas (Buzz) and Hutchison took the wonderful writing and gave it even more heart.  Beth Ehlers (Harley), Patti D'Arbanville (Selena) and even Maeve Kinkaed (the sometimes chilly Vanessa) also broke our hearts.

Best Use of History:

Jenna had been on the back burner so long we forgot how tied she was to everyone in Springfield.  Alex wanted to go to the service to support old friend Buzz; Harley remembered when she and her stepmother didn't get along; and Jenna told Vanessa she'd seen "Daddy" (the late Henry Chamberlain), and he "looks marvelous."

Best Death Scene:

The image of a devastated Buzz holding Jenna in his arms as she took her last breath won't be forgotten anytime soon.  Rauch says letting Hutchison go was a difficult decision.  'I like her enormously.  She's a wonderful actress, and over the years she has really been terrific.  But we really need to move on with that story."*
