Their Long and Winding Road

For GL’s Buzz and Jenna, love is back.  But will it last?

That's what fans are wondering now that one of Springfield's most tempest-tossed couples appear to have finally found love, passion and true happiness in each other's arms.  Word of advice: Don't get too comfy with this picture just yet.  There are roadblocks waiting right around the comer that you wouldn't believe!

Nonetheless, from the instant that GUIDING LIGHT's Jenna Bradshaw and Buzz Cooper met, fireworks erupted. But their timing was way off, despite the deep emotions they felt for one another.  After learning she was pregnant, Jenna bid Buzz a tearful good-bye and disappeared into the mists of mystery.  Fiona Hutchison, who created the role, remembers, "When Jenna left Springfield the last time, she was pregnant and later had given birth to Buzz's child, but of course, nobody really knew that, except for Vanessa."

At the time, Buzz was married to Nadine.  "Buzz was ever so stuck on Nadine, and she had her claws in tightly," the actress says, laughing.  After Jenna heard that Nadine was out of the picture, she was certainly standing on her own two feet.  I think Jenna kept close tabs on what was going on with Buzz because she was desperately in love with him, she just couldn't have him." But once the baby was born, Jenna realized just how strong her tie was to Buzz.

"Since she'd had his child, there was an incredible bond there, only he didn't know any of this at the time," she continues, "so as far as Jenna was concerned, she was always pining after him and just finding a way to get back to him." While she was abroad, Jenna became involved with the dashing and debonair Jeffrey Morgan, strictly as a means of survival.  "Basically she was down and out and I think she couldn't scratch two pennies together when she hooked up with Jeffrey," the actress notes.

But birds of a feather flock together, and it was their mutual lust for the finer things in life that initially attracted them to each other.  "I think Jenna was working on a heist at the time and probably fumbled a bit, and he caught onto her," Hutchison says, "and the next thing you know, they started working together as a team.  He created a shelter for her, and I think that he was charming, goodlooking and a good father figure to her child, but unfortunately, the way that they made their money was very illegal."

With a young child to protect, Jenna was reluctant to take chances that used to be second nature to her.  Now that little Coop was her priority, Jenna's feelings of love for the baby's father became stronger than ever and the need for her son to get to know his real dad took precedence over everything else.

However, when Jenna made the decision to return to Springfield, little did she suspect how much things had changed.  "I think as nature has it, as the child began to grow, she realized that he really needed to know his real father, and that's what started drawing her back to Springfield," Hutchison points out 'Then when she did finally make the stop back there just for a visit and to tell Buzz that it was his child, she discovered on that first day back that Buzz, was married to Reva.  That made her think twice that, no, this was not a good idea, and you can't go back because things have changed."

Meanwhile, Jeffrey had fallen in love with Jenna, and when he realized she couldn't get over Buzz, he was transformed from a caring man into a monster.  Hutchison feels deep down that Jeffrey's actions were prompted by his jealousy and unrequited love.  "Jeffrey realized he'd fallen very much in love with Jenna and the baby, and he didn't want to lose them," she says.  Yet despite his desperation, Jeffrey was ultimately unsuccessful in keeping Jenna and Buzz apart.

But while they are together at moment in time, their temperaments and outlooks remain vastly different, and meshing their lifestyles together will not be an easy task.  "Slinging hash in a diner isn't her style-it never has been-and both Buzz and Jenna know that," Hutchison laughs.  So while it's unlikely that they will change each other, acceptance of each other's differences seems more the order of the day.  At least for now.  "I Buzz is smart enough to know that when he gets Jenna, he gets what he gets," theorizes the lovely actress.  "He can't expect Jenna to change, and she is smart enough to know that she's going to have to get involved in some other sort of business besides helping Buzz with the diner."

With Jeffrey Morgan supposedly out of their lives, just what lies ahead for Buzz and Jenna?  Hutchison speculates that although the couple is together now, there are lots of obstacles just lurking around the comer.  "I think it will be tremendously blissful while Jenna and Buzz can be together and sharing the time with their son," she confides, "which is certainly a new road for them.  But it, will only, take so long before other things start to factor in.  There will be tremendous obstacles in the future."

Most likely that opposition will come from Buzz's two grown children, Frank and Harley Cooper.  "Frank has never approved of Jenna," says Hutchison, and Harley is very jealous, because Jenna has Buzz's full attention.  While they both love Buzz-who is their common denominator- I don't think these two women will ever love each other.  I think that makes a good triangle: father/daughter/mistress.'

While circumstances may change around them, for Jenna and Buzz those old passions continue to rage, and for viewers, that's the best payoff of all.  "They click whenever they get together," Hutchison points out.  "They're just one of those soap couples that work.  It's chemistry!"*
