TV's Most Beautiful Women
Feb 9, 1998

"Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder, but there's no denying the fact that the soap boat some fabulous faces.  Though they range from cute to extraordinary, these women all have one thing in common; each shines in her own way.  Coming up, breathtaking photos of the most beautiful actresses on the air."

60 Most Beautiful People List
Fiona Hutchison (Jenna, GL)

"There are no ugly people on soaps.  If they want an ugly person they take a beautiful person and put glasses on them."  Comedian Paul Reiser summed up the physical attributes of daytime actors with candid accuracy when he made that comment at an awards show.  True, soap stars are an elite bunch of Helens and Adonises, which made narrowing our list to only 60 an extremely difficult task.  In defining beauty, we went below the surface.  Compassion, courage, kindness and sense of humor mean more than finely chiseled features and a fit physique.  In conversations with our 60 honorees, we were reminded that inner beauty really is greater than outer perfection, but that some lucky souls have both.

Many regard GL's Fiona Hutchison as a strikingly beautiful woman -- but not, it seems, the actress herself.  "Personally, I don't see it," confesses Hutchison, whose trademark is her flowing mane of chestnut hair.  "I see all my faults.  That's probably from my ballet days, where you needed to be a perfectionist, and it's all about a physical look."

The 5-foot-4 inch Hutchison does have to battle the bulge.  During and after her pregnancy (she gave birth last September), her weight ricocheted back and forth.  "My weight fluctuates all the time," she notes  "I'm about back to normal now, but I definitely gained."

Hutchison thinks it's her ability to listen to others that makes her a beautiful person.  "I like to hear what's in their life and help them with their problems."

But for her actor husband, John Viscardi, whom she met on the set of OLTL when she was Gabrielle and he was Father Tony, it's the sum of the parts that's beautiful.  "Apart from her eyes and her wonderful personality, i think what is beautiful about her is her sensitivity to all aspects of life" -- EJ

10 Most Beautiful Women
Sept 1997

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder -- and the editors of Soap Opera Digest.  It wasn't easy picking the fairest of the fair, but we did our best.  In turn, the women we've spotlighting this year shared their thoughts (and secrets) on beauty.

Fiona Hutchison (Jenna, GL)

How do you feel about being chosen for this feature?

"It's a wonderful compliment.  I'm sure everybody would love to be picked -- if they were being truthful to themselves -- but it's really not easy to talk about.  I don't know what to say.  The only thing I consider beautiful about me is my family."

What perfume makes you feel scentsational?

"I don't wear perfume a lot, but when I do, I really like Anais.

Have you had any hair disasters?

"I've done all sorts of dastardly things to my hair in the last couple of years.  I'm lucky that it hasn't all fallen out.  But it's come close!"

Do you have any beauty tips to offer?

"I believe in drinking water and splashing it on my face every chance I get.  If it works for plants, it might as well work for us."

What beauty advice did your mother give you?

"My mother always said, "Darling don't leave the house without lipstick on.'  Of course, I always walk around with absolutely no makeup at all when I'm not working.  I often think,  "Oh, my poor old mum."

Were there any beauty benefits to being pregnant?

"When you're pregnant, you must drink more water and milk.  You keep that going through breast feeding, so for almost a year, it's part of your routine.  I think it made me much better hydrated as a result.  So that's a good benefit, even though you really don't do it for beauty's sake."

SPW: Top Tips From Our Top 50

Actors don't live by their shows' hair and makeup departments alone.  So we asked our beautiful people to share with us their tried and true tips for looking good, plus the products we might find in their makeup bags and toiletry kits.  Here are some of their responses.

Fiona Hutchison: (Jenna, GL)

Tip:  "Drink alot of water, as well as milk.  They are the two liquids you can never get enough of."

Products:  Cliniques Dramatically Different Moisturizer (for daytime) and Cliniques Turnaround Cream (for night); Shiseido lipsticks and eye shadows in brown and mauve tones; MAC cosmetics.  She uses vaseline Petroleum Jelly "on my hands, face and neck.  I put it on at night.  It's not very alluring for a husband or boyfriend, but once in awhile it's great to just slather it on."
