Outstanding Supporting Actress for 1992: Dec 1992, SPW
Fiona Hutchison (Jenna Bradshaw, GL): Why watch her? Hutchison deftly deploys several facets of the actor's art: wit, humor, subtlety and an elegant form of charm. Humor is so rarely used as the basis of a soap characterization that this is worth noting, and true wit is almost unheard of. Hutchison's performances have wit most often found in a drawing-room stage comedy, and yet these attributes are so perfectly integrated that they don't call undue attention to themselves. In giving Jenna control and consistency, Hutchison plays with the lightest touch, eschewing the usual soap opera tricks. What you need to know: A world renowned jewel thief, Jenna came to Springfield to steal the gems of it's leading citizens. She was vague about her past, mentioning only Swiss boarding school and a doomed love affair. But then she had to prove the existence of an American father she knew only from her late mother's stories. Using a photograph of a man in a car, Jenna determined that Henry Chamberlain, head of one of Springfield's first families, was her papa. He confirmed her story, but he's not telling the truth about her entire parentage.
Who to Watch For:
Fiona Hutchison (Jenna Bradshaw, GL):: Why watch her: On Guiding Light Hutchison skillfully and sympathetically deploys the complete arsenal of an actress' art. She's charming, mercurial, capable of warmth, power, softness, vulnerability and strength. She rages without stridency, and her comic by-play (usual with her handmaids) is always deft and delicious. What you need to know: When Jenna, a peripatetic British jewel thief, arrived, she was an outsider on the make. She's since gone legit, and acquire control of Spaulding Enterprises through the nefarious machinations of Roger Thorpe, whom she then married. Now pregnant with his child, she's begun to recognize his evil influence and doubt the wisdom of the unholy alliance she has with him.
Who to Watch For:
Justin Deas (Buzz Cooper, GL): Why watch him: You can't help but watch him. Deas must have to pick splinters out of his teeth every night for all the scenery he chewed at first. But since he's toned down the over-the-top performance that made his first appearances somewhat grating (but admittedly added credibility to the character's "outsider" status), his scene stealing really adds interest to the show. In fact he's often the highlight of a soap that's almost all highlights. What you need to know: Buzz went to Vietnam and took 20 years to get home, a misdeed for which his family -- particularly his son, Frank -- is just learning to forgive him. While he was gone he married the widow of a man he killed (even though he never divorced Nadine) and had a daughter Lucy. Now he's back with Nadine, but can't resist Jenna. |
