Having studied the many different
aspects of poetry presented in class, I have come across several poetic
devices that I like and think would improve my own poetry. Repetition
seems to work very well in somber, fearful poems, and I am curious to
see if it can be used to create a joyous mood as well as a depressing
one. I have learnt to be just that bit more careful with every
word I choose, as poetry is indeed a far more condensed form of writing
than prose and every word adds to potential interpretations and meaning.
The final component I look forward to experimenting with is the physical
spacing of words on the page. I have been interested with these word’s
effects of poem flow and meaning ever since reading some of Leonard Nimoy’s
poetry, which more often than not involves distinct spacing and indentation.
There are many forms of poetry I have yet to discover, but have found
our time in class a useful sample of the varied rhythmic structures poetry
encompasses.
An Imitation Of John
Dunn’s Works (“The Apprentice”)
Everywhere apprentice turns,
..................................................Perfection
lost inside
...................................................................................The
endless failures, cuts and burns
That meekness cannot hide.
Though he never passes muster,
..................................................Communicatory
knives
...................................................................................The
sweetness of her hair’s gold luster
Still drives his desperate lives.
Apprentice, someday master
true
..................................................Will
for today but fail
...................................................................................Yet
in the future sometime woo
And then his hopes prevail.
