The Spyro Story

Please note that this is not an official storyline, merely my interpretation of the story as followed in the games. It is will also contain major spoilers for the plots of the games covered.

Once upon a time, in a land far far away, there was a dragon. Now this dragon was young, agile and purple. His name, was Spyro. He enjoyed roaming his homeland of the Dragon Realms with his best friend Sparx, who incidently was a dragonfly. They went everywhere together all was fun, and all was games, that was until one fateful morning as a TV crew arrived to interview the elders about a certain Gnorc who had been banished from the Dragon Realms.

During the course of said interview, Gnasty, the Gnorc, was watching from his new home in the Dragon Junkyards. He had been preparing for a while now, to get back at the dragons he saw as invaders of his homeland around 1000 years ago. Gnasty had learnt several spells from some magic books he found whilst rumaging around in the junk. One book, authored by someone known as the Sorceress, gave details about two certain spells. He practiced one of them for a while, creating evil minions out of the gems that the dragons had lost and accidently thrown into the junkyard by mistake. After a bit of practice he had it almost perfected, now all he needed was to practise the second spell, a crystallizing spell. However, before he had a chance to practice it on a few select dragons, he caught sight of the broadcast and was angered by what the elders were saying about him, in a fit of fury he cast both spells over the entire Dragon Realms, crystallizing all of the dragons and creating minions out of a lot of the dragon gems that were lying about, these minions soon set about collecting all of the treasure in order for Gnasty to get another go at turning them into his minions.

However, as he had not gotten practice in with his crystallizing spell, he had missed one small, purple dragon, Spyro. Spyro, seeing that his homeworld was in trouble, set about freeing all of the dragons and collecting all of the gems before Gnasty could use them against him. Spyro and Sparx were to travel through the five dragon worlds, until he had freed enough and collected enough gems to get passage to the sixth world which Gnasty had overun, the Junkyard. A final battle ensued and Spyro defeated Gnasty, who exploded into several gems at the end. Spyro was then granted access to the loot that Gnasty had so far managed to collect. A celebrated hero, Spyro returned to his home, The Artisans, and decided to take a nice long vacation to Dragon Shores.

Several months later, Spyro had returned to the Artisans, but it was the rainy season and he was getting bored. Once again he decided to take a vacation to Dragon Shores, this time however the portal took him on a different route. Far away, in the realm of Avalar, several strange looking creatures were gathered about a portal with which they were hoping would help them out with their new little problem. Two weeks before this event, the Professor, a mole, had been experimenting with another portal and had accidently allowed a great evil into his world, Ripto. Ripto soon took about taking control of the realm of Avalar, starting with Summer Forest, the first world of Avalar.

In a desperate attempt to rid their world of this evil, the three of them, the Professor, Elora and the Hunter, went to Glimmer in order to connect with a dragon realm and to bring themselves a dragon to help. They felt a dragon could possibly help them as Ripto had made a point of mentioning that he disliked them when he first arrived. After a short amount of fiddling with the portal, the Professor finally succeeded in diverting a dragon to their world. Spyro arrived with a crash and immediately realised that this was not where he was supposed to be. Then, as if by chance, Ripto arrived, smashed the portal through which Spyro had just arrived and then noticed that Spyro was there. After a few vain threats, he took off with his two minions, Gulp and Crush, and took complete control of the castle of Summer Forest. Spyro was convinced by Elora, a faun, to help them out with saving their world from Ripto.

Along his journey through the realm of Avalar, he helped out all of the seperate worlds with their problems and convinced them to give him their Talismans, he needed them in order to be able to defeat Ripto's minions and to progress through to defeating Ripto. The only real obstacle to his progress was a bear called Moneybags, he was a greedy bear who enjoyed the company of gems. He would help Spyro if only he had enough gems to pay him with. Eventually, with the help of a few orbs too, he got through to a battle with Ripto, which he promptly won, again with the help of a few powered-up orbs. Now, with the evil Ripto gone from the world, the Professor finally got the portal in Winter Tundra working perfectly which was now a permanent connection to the Dragon Realsm and Dragon Shores. Spyro got himself a well deserved vacation.

Not long after this victory, the renowned festival, the Year of the Dragon, was upon the Dragon Realms. In this festival the new Dragon Eggs arrived. As the festival moved on to the feast, all of the dragons, and special guest Hunter, fell into a deep sleep with the eggs left unguarded. Seeing this as an oppourtunity, a mysterious figure climbed out of a tunnel in the ground and ordered several dinosaur-like creatures to take all of the eggs that were lying about. However, as she was taking the last egg, she disturbed Hunter and awoke the dragons, seeing their eggs being stolen, several dragons took after them and got stuck in the small holes used. After short investigation, Zoe, a fairy, arrived back from her trip through the tunnels and reported back that they came out on the other side of the world. A dragon elder immediately recognised that this meant the Forgotten Realms, from which dragons had been banished around 1000 years ago, they had moved here to their current home at that time. As Spyro was the only dragon small enough to fit through the tunnels, he was sent with Hunter to go and retrieve all 150 of the dragon eggs in order to save the race from extinction.

Upon arrival in the Forgotten Realm, Spyro was immediately threatened by the same character who had lead the thievery of the dragon eggs before, Bianca. Once again, Spyro had to free this world from an evil, but this time an evil that had been there for a long time. With the magic of this realm running out, Spyro had to use the collective power of the dragon eggs in order to reopen portals that were failing all over the place. At the completion of each world, Spyro faced a new enemy, one created by the Sorceress to destroy him. As he and Hunter progressed through too, they met new friends, first Shiela, a kangaroo, then Sgt. Byrd, a flying penguin, followed by Bentley, a yeti, and finally they freed a space monkey, Agent 9. Agent 9, it turned out, was one of the Professor's guards for his lab in Midnight Mountain. Also, strangely enough, the person set to guard these creatures was none other then Moneybags from Avalar. Quite how he reached the Forgotten Realms is unknown, however it is likely that he got through the Professor's lab's portal to Avalar. He was always one for seeing where he could make the most money, and since Spyro had emptied Avalar of gems, there was no reason for him to stay there and so he took up a job for the Sorceress.

During his visit, Hunter began to fall in love with the magical rabbit, Bianca, despite the fact that she was working for the Sorceress. This however had changed by the time Spyro reached Midnight Mountain as Bianca didn't want to hurt the baby dragons whereas the Sorceress had wanted to take all the wings off them, which would hurt no end. She helped Spyro out in getting to finally fight the Sorceress and in defeating her. Spyro, quick to celebrate, went off to the Sorceress's treasure trove and collected the last of the gems of the Forgotten Realms. However, the Sorceress was not yet fully beaten and she awaited a final showdown within this super-bonus world. Not one to turn down a fight, Spyro once again fought her and once again, he won. Finally ridding the Forgotten Realms of their evil ruler. Now all Spyro needed to do was to take back all of the baby dragons to the dragon realms in order to complete the Year of the Dragon festival.

As Spyro arrived back with the baby dragons, the last part of the festival began, the giving out of the dragonflies to the dragons. However, before this could be completed, Ripto arrived in the Dragon Realms and attempted to rid them of their dragonflies. Unfortunatley for him, his spell went slightly wrong and just sent the dragonflies out around the realm. This however was enough for Ripto as it still meant that the dragons would be powerless. He had to go collect up the dragonflies though in order to carry out whatever plan it was he had, so he left leaving Spyro weak without his dragonfly.

Bianca quickly sorted out their plan and found Sparx nearby, giving Spyro back his power. She also attempted to give him some extra abilities too, but only managed in giving him a breath that would allow him to capture the dragonflies. She also told him that with the power of a statue outside, he could gain those extra abilities by collecting some runes and bringing them to the statue.

And as per usual, Spyro took up this challenge with gusto. As well as Ripto invading, several of the creatures from his world also invaded too, Riptocs were everywhere, searching for the missing dragonflies and just generally terrorising the locals. Spyro soon found all 100 of the missing dragonflies and fought Ripto a few times. Beating him senseless and once again freeing the Dragon Realms from a great evil.

On vacation again, Spyro, Bianca and Hunter are relaxing when they get message of a great trouble in the Fairy Realms above. And like good hero's should, they set about helping the fairies by going there and freeing the crystallized fairies. The only clue to who was causing this, was the fact that Bianca had lost the Sorceress's spell book in the library where several Rhynocs worked. Throughout his travels in the Fairy Realms, Spyro finally met who it was that was doing this, a crazed Rhynoc who went by the name of Grendor. He had accidently given himself a second head as he tried to make himself smarter. This caused him to have a great headache that just wouldn't subside. He found another spell within the book that would help him with this problem. The spell involved the wings of 100 fairies, so he set about trying to capture all of them by first crystallizing them and then sending out Rhynocs to collect their frozen states.

This plan however failed, and as Spyro defeated Grendor for a second time, Zoe discovered the reason why Grendor was doing this. She then simply cast a spell on Grendor which removed his second head and returned him to normal. He thanked her and said that he had never wanted to be evil, he just couldn't see any other choice. He returned to working in the library where he had stolen Bianca's book.

On return from the Fairy Realms, they found that something had happened to the Dragon Realms. Somehow all of the fireflies that helped power the dragon's flames had been stolen and were now scattered around the world, not being very helpful. The elder told Spyro that he didn't know who it was that had done this, but an army of Rhynocs had invaded trying to capture all the fireflies and to take over the realms. Without the power of the fireflies, the dragons would have to leave the Dragon Realms as it would get too cold for them to survive.

Spyro once again was to set out to save the Dragon Realms from an evil for a third time. And, as with his adventures in the Fairy Realms, Spyro was oblivious to who it was that was behind all this, that was until he fought Crush, one of Ripto's minions. From that moment on, Spyro knew that it was Ripto. Third time lucky? Spyro was out to make sure that that wasn't true. He fought his way through the Rhynocs that Ripto had brought with him all the way through to another final battle with Ripto himself. Ripto once again fails to follow through with his plans and falls to the power of Spyro. Once again, Spyro is a hero.

Sometime after those events, Spyro was invited down to the Professor's Secret Lab in the Dragon Realms where the Professor wanted to show him a few things. First up was a mini-peephole that would allow him to keep an eye on Ripto so as to prevent him from trying to takeover any worlds again. The second was a large robotic butler, Butler. Unfortunately for them all, Butler malfunctioned and he caused the device keeping an eye on Ripto to expand which let Ripto through. He quickly stole a warp device off the Professor and was gone in a flash. The Professor quickly informed Spyro of a way to take control of the portal again in order to trap Ripto behind it, Spyro would have to collect all of the Hearts of the Dragon Realms.

In order to achieve this, Spyro needed to help out the keeper of the heart in each land. Collecting several items that had been stolen by Ripto as he travelled the world using the warp device. As Spyro progressed, he got back into the Professor's Lab and went through the portal there and into Ripto's homelands. There he needed to collect the hearts of those two lands also, the Heart of Rhynocs n Clocks was easy to get, as he had already gotten in during a battle with a creature that Ripto had created out of it. However the Heart of Ripto's Chateau was not so easy, Spyro would have to defeat Ripto once again. A long battle ensued, with Spyro using his powered-up abilities to defeat him, take the Heart of the land as well as the warp device. Once he had found all of the hearts, the Professor was able to seal up Ripto's land in order to prevent him from invading once again.

A Hero's Tail - Story currently unknown to me

A short while afterwards, several strange looking creatures started invading the Dragon Realms again. Wearing orange masks, they proceeded to terrorise the world. Spyro knew that is was up to him again. The devious plan created by Dr. Neo Cortex and Ripto, was in action. They had somehow managed to meet up, Ripto escaping his prison worlds, and they had decided to use Spyro and Crash Bandicoot against each other, and since they didn't know each other, they disguised the invading armies as the other hero. Therefore Spyro and Crash should have been fighting against each other, taking care of themselves while Ripto and Cortex simply took over the remaining world. However, they didn't bank on Spyro and Crash becoming friends and allies. They and their friends worked together to defeat Cortex and Ripto in one final space battle. And once again, the Dragon Realms and Crash's homeworld were safe.
